There’s is a low lying section just below our farm that sometimes collects water. It has not had water the last almost ten years. Now it is almost full of water! While we celebrate the rains for our super napier grass grows “super” fast, we experience some soil erosion on the sloppy section of the farm where we grow corn for the animals. We may have to add a few more rows of super napier grass to arrest the flow of storm water in the future.

The best part of the rainy season is the sheer beauty that emerges all around us. The most common plant is the maize crop, a few farmers intercrop with beans. The various trees, bushes and flowers are almost all in bloom. The green and a few scattered splashes of colour from the trees and bushes are a beauty to behold. The dust long soaked in the rain, making a morning walk irresistible!

On the farm, we have had a few of our cows calving down with some beauties! At the end of April, we are joined by 4 female interns from Dairy Training Institute Naivasha. This is the 4th cohort we are receiving from DTI, a partnership that gives the female students a chance to practice on the farm, what they have learned in class. We are intentional about female students. This was brought about when we learned that few farms take on female students since they don’t have separated accommodation.

We at Kuzuri pride ourselves in giving the female students in dairy sector an opportunity to experience the farm in a practical way. The students have their living quarters separated from the male quarters. The space accommodates four students at a time, and they learn with us for 10 weeks.  In the season they are with us, they get to name the calves. We have as a result very unique and modern names for the calves every internship season. Welcome, class of 2024. We hope you enjoy your stay with us.

This is also a season we experience very high expenses in preparing the land for planting of maize and weeding. We have had some fall army worms on the young maize crop. We try our best to spray with neem tree leaves and chilies. Sometimes we are successful. When we are not successful, we get agrovet  advice.  Also because of excess rain, our manure gets excessively wet, making it difficult to take it to the farm. Lets hope the rains ease.

Finally, we wish to assure our partners that we have a few heifers on sale.  We look forward to your inquiries.  Keep well.
